The TuffStand is a high-performance pipe support designed for oil and gas industry applications. Available in 12-inch and 24-inch models, this cutting-edge product from DuraPlas is set to transform oil and gas industry practices thanks to its

This blog comprehensively addresses TuffStand FAQs to help you understand the science behind its superior performance.

How is the TuffStand made?

The TuffStand, in its 12” and 24” variants, is manufactured using injection molding. This makes it stand out by design, differentiating it from other plastic pipe supports manufactured using rotational molding.

The injection molding process begins after placing plastic pellets in a hopper. The resin then transfers into the heating cylinder, where it melts into a viscous state. It’s then injected into a precisely engineered mold cavity, solidifying and adopting its unique shape. Once effectively cooled, the finished TuffStand is removed from the mold, excess material is trimmed, and the product undergoes quality control.

While the process is consistent for both TuffStand models, we employ separate molds due to material type, size, and design differences. This promotes precision and accuracy in the final product.

Besides the manufacturing process, TuffStand is superior due to these unique design elements:

  • Curved cradle
  • Geometrical base with ribs
  • Increased height
  • Thicker, angled side walls

TuffStand Materials

We use a different material for each TuffStand:

  • 12” TuffStand: Made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a superior plastic material known for its strength, durability, chemical resistance, and recyclability. A UV protectant adds enhanced weather resistance.
  • 24” TuffStand: Constructed from high-grade nylon, which offers superior strength, stiffness, heat resistance, and abrasion resistance. This material is even tougher than HDPE, making our 24” stand ideal for handling heavier loads. Notably, the TuffStand is the first pipe support to feature a nylon build, which speaks volumes of Duraplas' innovation.

Our choice of materials for each TuffStand model is based on the specific load, weight, and environmental condition requirements.

How is the TuffStand used?

The oil and gas industry uses the 12” and 24” TuffStand models. They provide a stable base for pipes during various operations, including pipeline installation, maintenance, and equipment support.

Each model accommodates a wide range of pipe sizes and weights. The 12” TuffStand is for 2” to 12” pipes and can support up to 3500 pounds. The 24” model is meant for pipes between 12” and 24” and is proven to hold up to 75,000 lbs in controlled environments.

Both models perform their designated roles excellently. The curved cradle safely secures the pipe and disperses the weight, enhancing safety by eliminating pressure points.

The sturdy, geometrical, and ribbed base increases contact with the ground, further aiding load distribution. This enhances overall stability and prevents the TuffStand from crumbling due to pipe weight or gravity.

The TuffStand's height also provides enough elevation for technicians to easily access and maneuver around the pipe during welding or inspection.

TuffStand guarantees stability and elevation, which enhances safety and convenience during pipeline installation and maintenance in the oil and gas industry.

Why is the TuffStand stronger and safer?

The high-strength materials used in its construction make the TuffStand stronger and safer. The use of HDPE for the 12” model and high-grade nylon for the 24” model ensures both models boast superior durability and sturdiness. We use injection molding, which allows for precise control over the thickness and distribution of the raw material, resulting in a product with a balanced strength-to-weight ratio.

The curved cradle holds the pipe in place, preventing it from tipping over and compromising the safety of the technician working underneath it.

The geometrical base with ribs distributes load weight, and finally, the thicker, angled walls augment the TuffStand's load-bearing capacity. This results in superior stability and promotes safety in the oil and gas industry. The TuffStand also promotes safety through:

  • Ergonomics: The elevated TuffStand design reduces worker fatigue and strain. It lowers the risk of injuries triggered by poor ergonomics.
  • Chemical resistance: HDPE and high-grade nylon resist chemicals used in the oil and gas industries. Thus, unlike steel or aluminum supports, they eliminate the risk of stand failure even in continued chemical exposure.

Compared to traditionally used supports like wood and metal skids, the TuffStand is significantly lighter, making it easier to handle and transport. It features a stackable side handle for easy handling, which substantially eases logistics. Unlike metal, the TuffStand is corrosion-resistant. It also doesn't rot like wood, making it ideal for long-term usage even in extremely harsh environments. These qualities fortify the TuffStand's safety as it remains impact-resistant for years.

Is the TuffStand cost-efficient?

While the upfront cost might be slightly higher than traditional materials like wood, the TuffStand is cost-efficient over the long term. Thanks to materials like HDPE and reinforcement with UV protectants, the TuffStand endures harsh conditions, heavy loads, and frequent usage. This prevents frequent replacements, meaning you save on procurement expenses.

Unlike wooden supports, the TuffStand requires minimal maintenance, further reducing operational costs and downtime. Furthermore, both models optimize workflow, leading to faster pipeline installation and maintenance processes.

By investing in TuffStand, oil and gas companies can optimize operations, reduce costs, prevent worker accidents and claims, and improve overall productivity.

The Tuffsand is a significant leap in pipe support technology. Its superior strength, thanks to high-grade materials and sophisticated design, coupled with its easy handling features, makes it an indispensable tool for the oil and gas industry.
